Yahoo was born as a list. I was betting the list would run out of names.

Yahoo incorporated on the first of March 1995. It started as two students keeping a directory of the sites they liked, a handmade index of a web still small enough to catalog by hand.

That is the tell. When something needs an index, it has become too big to hold in your head and too valuable to ignore.

I was selling domain names in those months. The bet was simple and a little arrogant: the good names were finite, the web was infinite, and one of those facts was going to make the other one expensive.
