YouTube launched in 2005, and suddenly anyone with a camera could reach the world without permission from a studio or a station. In January, the Huygens probe landed on Titan and sent back the first images from the surface of a moon in the outer solar system.
In 2005 YouTube arrived and the last gatekeeper fell. For a century, reaching a mass audience meant a studio, a station, a printing press, someone’s permission. YouTube made distribution free and universal overnight. A kid with a camera could reach more people than a television network.
I keep a simple rule from watching this happen: whenever a technology removes a gatekeeper, go and stand where the newly ungated people are. That is always where the next decade gets built.
It was true for video in 2005. It is true for intelligence now.
